Rajmachi Hike

Time & Place of Departure from Pune: 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, 30th December 2006 at Pune Railway Station
Campsite
: Rajmachi village.

We reached lonavla by a local train from Pune at 6.30 and with a lot of excitement in the train we reached lonavala by 8.15.

On this trek the SMs accompanying us were Ajit, Khoj, Jaosh and Varun (ex SM). The people who came for the trek were Hansmukh, Aakil, Yezdi, Raunak, Ralph, Arvin, Navroze, Pavneet, Rohit.

We started walking towards Rajmachi on the way we split up that was Ajit and Khoj had some work so they took a different route to Rajmachi village. We were accompanied by two SMs, Jaosh & Varun.

We started of trekking at around 9.00. By around 11.30 we reached the Tungarli dam where we first had a wash, ate our breakfast and rested for around half an hour. Then we moved on from there at 12.15.

We went walking talking through the hills & vegetation and we took a couple of breaks in the middle. Finally, we took along break at a point which was called the valley view point by Varun.

While walking the SMs were always leading the road, the juniors behind them & at the end were the seniors.

Then we took a long break at a dried river which is very difficult to cross during the rainy season. Then a few guys went with Varun along the path of the river to see whether there are any trails of smaller streams down the river.

Then we moved on trekking for another hour then we reached Rajmachi village. On the way, what kept us alive were Varun’s stories. When we reached the village it was difficult for us to find the temple and Varun & Rohit who had already reached quite some time before us. So we sent a search party Aakil & Raunak .Then they found Varun & Rohit who were sitting outside the temple and talking. Then the rest of the group also moved towards the temple.

Then we rested for around an hour or so. During that time we made good relations with a family over there. It was the Eknath’s family & they were supposed to provide breakfast & tea for which we would pay them the next day when we were leaving.

During the camp, we made two patrols:
Water patrol
They had to fetch the water from the cave all the time whenever water used to get over.
It consisted of
Aakil, Yezdi, Ralph, Rohit

Fire patrol
They had the responsibility to cook food and clean the utensils.
It consisted of
Hansmukh, Raunak, Arvin, Navroze, Pavneet.

Then water patrol went with Varun to the cliff to see the views from atop the hills till the food was prepared. They spent sometime there and came back to have the lunch prepared by the fire patrol.

The Rajmachi village had two forts Manoranjan & Shrivardhan. After eating our lunch we decided to go and climb Shrivardhan. But Hansmukh remained back for some reason & till now Ajit and Khoj had not yet reached so Hansmukh sat in the temple waiting for them.

We started climbing up at 4.30 pm. The way upwards was very steep. Still we made it on top by 5.00. We had quite a lot of fun on top singing scouting songs, cracking jokes, etc.

From atop the fort we could appreciate how high we were & we could also see the famous Duke’s nose. A train moving through the hills at night looked like squares of white light moving around the hill.

We came down by 7.30 pm. When we reached Ajit & Khoj were resting in the temple.
Ajit had got cramps in his leg and both were tired. Their journey from the other side was like climbing 3 Visapurs and coming.

Then we had our dinner at around 8.30. After that, the two patrols were supposed to prepare a skit, a song & a patrol call on the spot.

Then we had an optional campfire for which we had only the seniors. During the campfire we were singing songs but Raunak drove us mad since he didn’t know which song to sing when.
For eg:
When we were singing desi pop, he would suddenly switch over to Ghazals.

Then we finished our campfire by 2.00 and then we went to sleep. At night there were a couple of mice in the temple that troubled everybody.

In the morning we had our breakfast provided by Eknath. Then Ajit, Khoj & Hansmukh left early since they were slow. Then we left around an hour after them. While going back Aakil & Yezdi went faster than rest of the group & caught up with Ajit & Khoj. Then we again rested at the dam & after half an hour or so we left for the station

We then caught the train and reached Pune at around 3.30 pm

At the end, all I would like to say is that all those who missed the camp, missed a great experience too...

16th December 2006 : Forts Tournament

Forts Tournament

This is one game which everyone loves - FORTS !!! So it was decided that this meeting would strictly be dedicated to a meeting long forts tournament.

Everyone assembled as usual at 2:00 pm and Apurva called a rally. Ajit and Khoj weren't present for this meeting and hence Terence was made in charge. We recited the prayer song and soon after began planning strategies. All of us moved behind the Gulati Hall to play what was going to be a tiring but enjoyable day of forts.

The ties were as follows :

P1 vs P2
P4 vs P3
P1 vs P4
P2 vs P3
P2 vs P4
P1 vsP3

In the first game, it was always on the cards that P1 would win because P2 had just 4 scouts attending the meeting. Nevertheless, Sahil played his very best and came close to scoring quite a few times but an acccurate shot by Taha towards the end of the first half sealed the game for P1.
RESULT : P1 - 1 bt P2 - 0

The second game was one of the best of the tournament, with two evenly contested teams pitted against each other. Throughout the game, both teams played equally well and it all came down to the final minute when Apurva scored a sensational goal 5 seconds before the final whistle was blown.
RESULT : P3 - 1 bt P4 - 0

Hansmukh's patrol were always going to be favourites against P1, but P1 showed great fight and defended well. They came close to scoring a couple of times and so did P4. But in the end, both teams remained equal and the match, a draw
RESULT : draw

It was now P2's chance to play against P3 and P4 on a trot. But Sahil got good support from his juniors and tried hard to win. In the match against P3, he played at his very best, but missed the fort too many times. P3 eventually scored once and won. but one must admit, that with a bit more of support, P2 could've stolen the show.RESULT : P3 - 1 bt P2 - 0

Already out of the top 2, P2 and P4 played a 3rd-4th place game which, I felt, was the best game of the tournament.
P2 started off brilliantly, with sahil scoring a fantastic goal, straightaway putting P4 under pressure. It seemed as if the underdogs would get their first victory, but a late equalizer from Arvind kept P4 in the match.

The match then went into penalties, and with each team having taken four shots each, and with one shot left, Sahil hit the fort and loosened it to such an extent that a faint touch would bring it down. Raizada then just slowly hit it, crashing the fort and P2's hopes.
RESULT : P2 - 1 drew with P4 - 1 at full time ::: P4 won 1-0 in penalties.

The final wasn't as one sided as the scoreline read at the end, as it was well faught out between P1 and P3. Both started off positively, taking shots and defending equally well, both having an answer to each other's strategies. But with 7 minutes left and the scoreline reading 0-0, Elston 2 goals in a minute, thus changing the face of the match completely. P3's shoulders began drooping and with 2 minutes left, Rohit scored a goal, thus giving victory to a sprirted performance by P1 !!!
RESULT : P1 - 3 bt P3 - 0

Standings for forts -
P1
P3
P4
P2

Scores after the meeting

P1 - 80
P2 - 60
P3 - 150
P4 - 200
